The flag was first flown in 1972. During this era, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs was set up to assist the cultures. In 1976, the Aboriginal Land Rights Acts were finally passed, allowing Aborigines to re-claim their ancestral lands and sacred sites. In 1992, in the famous Mabo judgement, the Australian High Court ruled that the Aborigines had rightfully owned the land long before Captain James Cook claimed it for England in 1770. The following year, the Native Title Act of 1993 voted to balance the interests of the original Aborigine land owners with the encroaching cattle and sheep stations, manufacturing and mining businesses, and settlements that later took over the land.

And Cook’s adventures didn’t end yet, as he continued to explore the east coast of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef. Back at home, though, his descriptions of the lush, remote continent had an unexpected effect; rather than sparking visions of a huge resort playground for European rulers, they were instead stirring up thoughts of a convenient criminal outpost. In England, it was an era of war, chaos, and poverty, when – despite there being some 200 offenses legally punishable by death – convicts were overflowing the prisons and bands of thugs were often left to take over the streets.

Australia’s other flightless species, the cassowary, is almost as tall, lives in the rainforests of tropical Queensland, and can be identified by its bright blue crest and red wattle. A smaller but equally well-known native is the kookaburra, the largest bird in the kingfisher family, whose bubbly, melodious call was the inspiration for the country’s famous ditty. The mallee fowl is another unique Australian creature whose nesting habits have inspired much amazement among biologists worldwide. The females of this chicken-like bird dig a deep mound in warm sand and rotting plant matter, then lay their eggs.
