A kind of football we played with a leather ball stuffed with wool was by no means so diflicult. The ball was supposed to be round, but it never really was. I liked playing with the neighbours' children, but I was happiest of all with my sister Tsering Droma. When I was very small she used to carry me around on her back, and later on she would always take my part against other children when there were quarrels.
After that she would add a little salt and then let the tea boil for a moment or two. In our province of Amdo people used dried tea leaves pressed into bricks which were imported from China through the province of Kham. It was a rather coarse kind of tea, and these bricks often contained whole leaves, and sometimes even stalks. Our salt came from Changthang in the northern plateaux of Tibet where it was obtained from the salt lakes there and sent by yak or similar transport to other parts. A figure which keeps popping up in my earliest recollections is that of the village herdsman.
The fifth and sixth days of the sixth month were both devoted to Kyeri. By this time the snow on its flanks was all melted away, and only the topmost pinnrde still fistened with its covering of eternal ice. The ride to the foot of the mountain lasted three days and went through a completely A HAPPY C H I L D H O O D 53 uninhabited area, so the villagers had to take everything they neededalong with them.
